Discussions

First-year students and new transfers to L&S had an opportunity to discuss the films with a professor and a small group of fellow students by signing up for an hour-and-a-half discussion session. Faculty members leading discussions included:

  • George Brimhall, Geology
  • Janet Broughton, Philosophy, Dean of Arts & Humanities
  • George Chang, Nutritional Sciences
  • John Connelly, History
  • Hubert Dreyfus, Philosophy
  • Jon Gjerde, History
  • Christina Maslach, Psychology
  • Daniel Melia, Rhetoric
  • Mark Richards, Earth & Planetary Science
  • Tyler Stovall, History, Dean of the Undergraduade Division
  • Duncan Williams, Buddhist Studies
  • Linda Williams, Film Studies
  • Wen-Hsin Yeh, History
  • Maciej Zworski, Mathematics

In his discussion session, Professor George Chang focused on the historical, cultural, and martial contexts of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, then led the students in a slow-motion re-enactment of the combat scenes. Here Professor Chang and his wife, Abby Jang, demonstrate a martial-arts move, then he and the students try out a kick--from a sitting position to improve their balance.
