Discussions
First-year students and new transfers to L&S had an opportunity to discuss the films with a professor and a small group of fellow students by signing up for an hour-and-a-half discussion session. Faculty members leading discussions included:
- George Brimhall, Geology
- Janet Broughton, Philosophy, Dean of Arts & Humanities
- George Chang, Nutritional Sciences
- John Connelly, History
- Hubert Dreyfus, Philosophy
- Jon Gjerde, History
- Christina Maslach, Psychology
- Daniel Melia, Rhetoric
- Mark Richards, Earth & Planetary Science
- Tyler Stovall, History, Dean of the Undergraduade Division
- Duncan Williams, Buddhist Studies
- Linda Williams, Film Studies
- Wen-Hsin Yeh, History
- Maciej Zworski, Mathematics
In his discussion session, Professor George Chang focused on the historical, cultural, and martial contexts of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, then led the students in a slow-motion re-enactment of the combat scenes. Here Professor Chang and his wife, Abby Jang, demonstrate a martial-arts move, then he and the students try out a kick--from a sitting position to improve their balance.
